Hinckley told the student body: This university will become increasingly unique among the universities of the nation and the world. We must never lose that uniqueness. We must hold tenaciously to it.

What on earth are you going to talk about? We are a faith that values marriage and family and sexual chastity very highly. Unequivocally, the way that we talk to youth, singles, and marrieds about sexuality exposes how much we want all sexual thought and behavior to be contained to the presumably safe context of marriage. Let me begin by saying that I would like to help single members of our faith community forge a strong relationship to themselves inclusive of their God-given sexuality , solid relationships with others, as well as a strong relationship to the highest principles in our faith.
In other words, as Christians, I hope for all of us marrieds and singles alike to approach our sexuality in line with our moral commitments and ideals, in a way that fosters a strong sense of self and a capacity for intimacy with others. This is the point of all of the commandments, remember. To some it seems our sexuality undermines our attempts to be good, particularly if you are single. And I will talk to you today about what I think this requires of us as a church community and as individuals within it whether single or as friends of singles.
Bro Jo’s Guide to Relationships: For LDS Young Single Adults
Beginnings[ edit ] Adherents believe that Joseph Smith was called to be a modern-day prophet through, among other events, a visitation from God the Father and Jesus Christ. This vision would come to be regarded by the LDS Church as the most important event in human history since the resurrection of Jesus. These groups have no affiliation with the LDS Church. For two years after Smith’s death, conflicts escalated between Mormons and other Illinois residents.
Smith had predicted that the church would go to the West and be established in the tops of the Rocky Mountains.
Amanda has spelled out several excellent ideas for good parenting to single Mormon adults. These same principles apply if you have single adult ward members or single adult friends. These missteps really do happen! Hoping that when we all know better — we do better. Here are a few things to keep in mind that may help keep your interactions with your single child in balance: Be aware of accommodations you make for the spouses of your children that put the single adult in a less-than desirable place.
Be careful with the lure of grandchildren. By all means be outstanding, present, supportive, loving grandparents; but please recognize that the single child may be left out. Do you visit the single child as much as the ones with grandkids? When the family gets together, is it all about the babies and the recitals and what the kids want to do, or is there time for the adults to be adults?
Take an interest in their interests.

Makes You Think Mormon Life Dating can be fun, but then again it can also be completely frustrating, confusing, and time-consuming. Within dating, we often have unrealistic expectations. Sister Holland at an address at the institute at UVU warned us about making composite expectations for those around us. She warned us that this habit is dangerous because it is unrealistic to expect a year-old to have the qualities and attributes that often take decades to develop. You are hoping to catch that perfect man. I have yet to see one who is perfect. Aim high, but do not aim so high that you totally miss the target. What really matters is that he will love you, that he will respect you, that he will honor you, that he will be absolutely true to you, that he will give you freedom of expression and let you fly in the development of your own talents.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the growing disparity between the numbers of single Mormon men and single Mormon women. But amidst all the hand-wringing about what this means for dating and marriage, there are larger implications for what it means for Mormonism, and I had quite a few follow-up questions. So I tracked down sociologist Rick Phillips , who with Ryan Cragun has authored the forthcoming study on the sex ratio disparity among Utah Mormons.
Both scholars are past presidents of the Mormon Social Science Association. And this is especially true in Utah as compared to the rest of the nation. Conservative denominations in the United States tend to have more women than men, so the sex ratio imbalance in Mormonism is not particularly surprising, even if it is rather severe.
Is it fair to expect that today’s Mormon young adults, coming of age in a vastly different environment where women get married at 27 and men at nearly 30, should also marry so young?

Children are our most precious gift from God—our eternal increase. Yet we live in a time when many women wish to have no part in the bearing and nurturing of children. Many young adults delay marriage until temporal needs are satisfied. But the NMS showed a clear drop in the percentage of Mormons who get married while still in their teens, as Oaks himself did.
Apostle Elder Jeffrey R. Holland speaks in a worldwide broadcast to young single adults of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joined by Sister Carole M. Stephens, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency, and Elder Donald L. Hailstorm of the Seventy, on campus of Utah Valley University, Tuesday, March 8,
Below is the text of the guidelines. When this is not sufficient or feasible, the Church stands ready to help. In an effort to meet the needs of incoming and outgoing members of the ward, the following guidelines have been outlined. If you need help, first seek assistance from your family and extended family.
Arrange for help from your family and extended family by contacting them well in advance of your move. Possibilities may include parents, siblings, cousins, uncles and aunts. You may also consider seeking help from your business associates. Hire professionals to help. In keeping with the principle of self reliance, if you need additional help and have financial savings, you should seriously consider contracting with a moving service provider such as Rocky Mountain Movers, The Movers , Helping Hands, or Moving and Maids, etc.
A minimum of two weeks notice must be given to receive help from the ward. The coordinator will review with you your effort to engage your family, extended family, and financial resources in assisting you to move,— both physically and financially. Moving assistance is not available on Sunday. You may want to first look to your family for those vehicles. Or perhaps the best option is to rent a moving van from U-Haul, Budget, or Penske.
